This Fisherbabe LOVES Her $30 Dollar Rod…

…and cannot understand why everyone makes fun of her when she states “I fish with an Ugly Stik“!!!!! I mean, I understand that there are more expensive and fancier rods out there. But I know that my Ugly Stik will hold up and serve me well. SO WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL?????

I am starting to become a little hurt and maybe even offended by some of the remarks I get when I pledge my allegiance to Ugly Stik Rods. I mean…ok so ya…I have been a little ticked off at the company lately because they will not make MY PINK ROD…but that is another issue that I will not go into again here!!! I just wanna know why its so bad that I love my cheap, old ugly stik.

Some of the most recent responses I have received are:

“You are NOT serious”

“You cannot possibly be serious”

“Why do you fish with that cheap, old thing”

“Do you know anything about fishing gear”

“Oh sweet thang…you need serious help”

and my favorite…”Awwwww…that is SOOO cute”

Now…I will not deny that I like being called cute, but Ugly Stiks are not cute…and I am not cute for using one. I am just a fisherbabe who likes products that are dependable, sturdy, trustworthy, strong, and capable. I like companies that have strong reputations for good products and great customer service.

I fish in locations that are remote and isolated. There are no corner marinas or tackle shops. I get dropped off by a float plane in the middle of an island with the instructions to “lay out a tarp if there is an emergency and we will get to you in a day or two.” This is not a place in which you want your gear to break down.

So I use Ugly Stiks because I trust them. I know that they will work. I know that under most circumstances my rod will last me not only this trip but MANY trips to come…and all for under $30.00!!! What can beat that!!

Now this post is not meant to insinuate that my choice is better than anyone elses. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of rods that I would like to try someday. I would really like to fish with a St. Croix rod and a G. Loomis rod. I would LOVE to try them out and see how they stand up to my kind of fishing trips!! I am sure they would be awesome!!

I know that, if I ever get to try these new rods, I will be super impressed and they will work beautifully. But I also know that I will have an ugly stik hidden away in my rod case…just in case.

So I wanna know…What kinds of rods do you fish with and what have been your favorites over the years??? Has anyone ever given you a hard time for liking your favorite gear??? Feel free to join in if you are into another sport and tell us what comments you have encountered with your gear choices!!!!

Happy Commenting ~

I own two ugly sticks, so preach on sister. Honestly, they have yet to let me down, and I've owned more expensive poles that broke.

My favorite fishing rod of all time is this Mitchell. It was on discount at Wal-Mart like 12 years ago, and I picked it up as a backup rod. Little did I know that 12 years later, a few over 3lb bass, many a fish, and a 8lb walleye later that it would still be going strong.

I'm with ya on this post.

Keep using what you like, Lizzie! as long as it works for you – GREAT! Ugly stiks are tough rods. There are a lot of people outthere who equate fiberglass rods with cheap rods – its simply not the case.

Does my 45" pike count for more than your 45" pike because I caught mine on a custom Musky rod and you caught yours on an Ugly Stik?? Hell no.

keep on doing what you're doing

Glad to find another girl who enjoys fishing! I get crap all the time about the rods and lures I use. Hey, if I think it's pretty and it works for me, who cares, right?

SimplyOutdoors…thanks for having my back on this one…I just don't get the big fuss and I am glad to know there are others like me!!

Joe…aren't you in Canada already or are you still losing sleep and chomping at the bit…lol!! I cannot wait for you to throw that hammer. I am almost as excited for you as for my own trips…almost :)

Izzy ~ You are right…it is ALWAYS great to find another fisherbabe out there. Please keep in touch and lets chat about fishing sometime!!

Hey fisherbabe, hang tough, I have been using ugly stix for years and they are tough and durable, I have even closed the trunk on and ugly stick and it is still in my rod arsenal. Let them all tease you, but you are right on, you can't beat an ugly stick for the price, and they are always dependable, no matter what you fish for. Yes there are more expensive rods, but I don't think you can sacrifice dependability for light and pretty. Enough said!

It is not the size or kind of rod that counts, it's what you do with it.
Tight lines and bent rods

Lizzy, I am kind of late posting on this topic. However, I just needed to add that Ugly Stik rods are my favorite also. I have other more expensive rods, but, primarily fish with the Ugly Stik because it is dependable, strong, and does the job I need every time I use them. You are so right, expensive doesn't mean the best always. BTW, I think that Ugly Stik's manufacturer ought to build you a "pink rod" for all that you have done to promote fishing with Ugly Stik's and all the "fisherbabe's" you are lining up to purchase them.

I would have to say " Tell me you're not serious" when I hear about you buying a rod for anything over a hundred dollars. I'm cheap. I wouldn't know if those rods are really any better. On my budget, I would be afraid to use one that expensive.

Last, but not least, I have 5 rods. 3 Ugly Stiks which which I've had for years and love, a Daiwa and a Shamino. The Daiwa and Shamino were free, so they don't count. Seems we're all with you on liking the Ugly Stik.
