Hey guys – I just wanted to share some funny stories posted by some GetREELed.com members when I asked them to tell me about their fish that got away…

I’ve only posted some snippets of their stories here on the Ultimate Fishing Directory Blog so make sure to click through to read the entire tale.

You never know… it may help you next time you’re fighting to keep your catch!

Scott H:
“The best fishing trip of the year for me and my friends from SBD Kayak Fishing was our trip to Antero Reservoir in Colorado. This placed was stocked regularly with BIG trout and constantly produces 4-7 pounders almost daily.

We went there in our fishing kayaks and started getting into some big trout in the edge of this tall weed bed. All in a row we each hooked into giant trout- but MINE…oh that fish…” Read More

Ira B:
“t was so sad. I grew up on Long Island and never really fished for Striped Bass because the size limit was 36 inches at the time. I have always preferred blue fish myself, to eat and to catch…” Read More

Jesse:
“All I can say on this one is this…..Me and two friends were fishing about 3 miles outside the Boyton Inlet drifting finger mullet…” Read More

Steve G:
“It began like many other days. The weather was a nice warm late spring day, clear skies and the sun shining bright. I made my way down to a hole on the North Saskachewan river just outside and upstream from Edmonton. We have been fishing there for many years and it was usually good for some goldeye, walleye, pike, sauger and some red-tailed suckers…” Read More

Cheers to everyone for sharing

If you’ve got a great story to tell, stop by GetREELed.com and share with us!

Yes that’s right folks…The Fisherbabe is headed to fish Mackay Lake during the Lake Trout Spawn in the first weeks of September. There are a couple of reasons why this lake rocks with the first and most important being the potential for TROPHY LAKERS. There are also big grayling in this lake which excites me more than I can possibly say.

Another rockin’ piece of trivia about this awesome lake is that it is part of the ice road in the hit show “Ice Road Truckers.” Now…I do not know how many of you watch that show, but I am totally hooked on it. I love Lisa who is new to the show this season (which is in Alaska), but I sincerely hope to see her truckin’ on Mackay someday. I am super excited to get to fish in a place where one of my favorite shows was filmed.

Now, I have never been this far North. That’s another reason I am extremely excited about going to this lake. Mackay Lake is only 150 miles from the Arctic Circle and on the tundra. How cool is that????? Also, if there is a clear night, I will finally get to see the famed “Northern Lights” otherwise known as Aurora Borealis. Seeing this natural wonder is on my “To Do Before I Kick It” list, and I am stoked to cross it off. Also, I get to visit Yellowknife which will be pretty special, as well.

The only thing that concerns me at this point is the cold. It is gonna be freeeeeeezing up there at that time of the year. As you all can imagine, this princess is not fond of the cold, and I am pretty sure the cabin walls aren’t painted pink for my pleasure. As of right now, I am pushing the thought of the cold out of my mind…now if I can just get my hubby to quit asking me if I am ready to freeze my a** off, all will be good. I mean…I just have to pack right and I will stay warm…I hope. Maybe I should start packing…

Since becoming a bona-fide fishin’, exploring, and all around adventuresome babe, my idea of what luxury means has changed drastically. I used to think that I could only be happy if my bed was turned down and a mint was cheerfully placed upon my pillow. Now…there is no better feeling than walking into that cabin for the first time and seeing an ancient wood burning stove and a hot shower. You would be surprised at how a hot shower each night and a running indoor toilet can feel like your own little piece of heaven. Fishing has definitely transformed my idea of what is fun!!

There are so many things about this trip that excite me. It will be an adventure, for sure, as I will be exploring and experiencing things that I have not before. I will for sure find out if I am as hard core as I claim to be when I wake up to 35 degree mornings and the guys are waiting for me at the boat. There will be no staying in the cabin if it is too cold and no complaining if it snows. I will be the only woman fishing on this trip, and it is my goal to keep up with the guys. I mean…I have to REPRESENT!!!

I am pretty confident in my ability to out fish them…even if the only pink I see is on my raincoat!! If you wanna check out where I will be spending the first weeks of September (we will be fishing for 8 FULL days!!), check out http://www.truenorthsafaris.com/.

The trip did not let me down. It was a great adventure. I have never seen so much wildlife on one trip in my life. It was pretty amazing to say the least, and I would HIGHLY recommend the trip to anyone who is interested in the outdoors and amazing natural beauty.

Anyways, what does this have to do with any present posting I may do? Well, today I was down in my basement sorting through some old tax documents (I know…ICK…but its that time of year) and guess what I came across?????? My old diary entries from that trip to Alaska. It was quite a lot of fun to sit down and read my entries because that trip was one of my first BIG adventures as a nature loving woman. I thought I would share some of it with here for todays post.

May 26, 2007: The flight was long or at least it seemed that way. Of course, I slept most of the trip so I can’t really say for sure…lol. I find sleeping while traveling is the best sleeping one can find. We ate at McDonalds for dinner. I know most would ask…Why McDonalds? But eating there always reminds me of vacations and always gets me excited for the rest of the trip.

May 27, 2007: We made our way to Denali today. Denali National Park is the most amazing thing I have ever seen and all we had today was a shallow view of the park. Just a glimpse really of what it will offer us. Saw some Dall Sheep on the mountain with our Binoculars…they were so far away and really small…but it was still cool. They were very high up. We checked into Lakeview Inn afterwards and it is a beautiful lodge. The view is amazing here. We ate at McDonalds again…and a little local pizza place in Healy…This makes a HAPPY LIZZY.

May 28, 2007: Today we went on a hike…and OMG…it was torturious. My legs were so on fire the whole way up…I am out of shape!!! It was so amazing at the top, though. We were about 20 feet away from some Dall Sheep and I got the most amazing pictures. That was so cool. PLUS we hiked up the Mountain so far the view was absolutely amazing. We ate at the inn for breakfast and ate at a local place called Salmon Bake for lunch and dinner in Denali.

May 29, 2007: Today we went on a bus tour of Denali. I saw GRIZZLIES right outside our bus. I took lots of video and photos of them. It was pretty amazing. The bears were so close. At one point, they walked right in front of the bus. Cody, Gregg, and Rikki went on a hike up to Mount Mckinley and so they did not see them. I was a lucky duck. We also saw moose and glaciers from far away.

May 30, 2007: Today we drove along the Denali Highway. It was the most amazing scenery. The mountains were beautiful and we saw a mosse and her calf…it was just barely walking straight so it must have been pretty young. The fishing wasn’t as good as we hoped but we are going to keep trying along the little streams and ponds we come across on the drives. We stayed at a really overpriced inn…but oh well…we did get to eat at a really amazing little cafe that was super fun!!!

May 31, 2007: Today we drove back through anchorage and headed onwards to Seward. We had a flat and had to switch out the rental car. What a mess…We left achorage after visiting the Alaska Fur Exchange…what an interesting little place. It is a little pricey but fun nonetheless. I think for souvenirs of this trip I might frame some of my photos. We saw a moose on the side of the road that was so close it was scary…but I think he fell in love with me a little…he started following me to our car!!!

This is the moose that loved me!! Isn’t he a cutie!!

June 1, 2007: Today was the Kenai Fjords Tour which I have been looking forward to for a while. The ocean was really rough though and I got seasick. I spent the majority of the tour on the bathroom floor of the boat. I wasn’t the only one…there were a lot of other sickies too Although, we had to turn around before hitting the major scenery, I saw some of the most amazing things I have ever seen despite my sickness and all the nasty grossness that was me on this trip was totally worth it. I saw whales, bald eagles, sea lions, puffins, and otters. It was so awesome…and afterwards we visited exit glacier. This was pretty cool too…but its receding so fast that it makes me sad. Global warming sucks!! We drove to Homer and are staying in Anchor Point at this cool little cabin. I would like to have a B&B here someday I think

June 2, 2007: Today was Halibut Fishing!! 11 hours we spent on the ocean fishing and I loved it. I caught 5 fish overall. I kept 1 and that made me sad…I really don’t like to keep the fish I catch but I hear these are the freshest and best tasting halibut ever and I want to take some to my dad. Cody and I together caught 16 lbs worth that we are taking home. My biggest fish was 26 pounds but I did not keep that one. The guide was so awesome. I had so much fun. Rikki caught a 65 lb fish and boy was that exciting!!!

June 3, 2007: Cody, Gregg, and Rikki all went Salmon fishing this morning down in Homer but I elected to stay behind and do laundry and repack. Tomorrow we head out on a 3 day fly in trip to Salmon Fish at Alexander Creek and I wanted clean laundry before we go and do not have access to facilities. I cannot wait to fish for Salmon for 3 days. This should be great!!

That is the extent of my diary entries. I can tell you that Alexander Creek was disappointing…we missed the salmon spawn and therefore, did not catch but a few fish while we were there. I hear it occured about a few days after we left. The scenery was pretty amazing though and so all was not lost.

This trip was one of the best I have been on. Typing up these journal entries takes me back and I realize now how bad I want to visit Alaska again. I think I would move there if given the chance. I highly recommend this trip and hope you enjoyed my post!!!

So I have made the decision to go fishing WAY MANY MORE times this summer. We don’t live too far from the border and so I have been doing some massive research on fishing in Ontario. I hear the fishing is pretty good there, and although the lakes are more frequented by fisherpeople, I think it will be a good time. Surely, there is enough fish to go around.

Because great fishing trips are usually pretty pricey, most of my research has been centered on finding the best fishing at the lowest cost. The first place I looked was to a site that is great for fishing places in Ontario (http://www.ontariossunsetcountry.ca/). This site lists most, if not all, of the camps, lodges, and sites that are available for those looking for a great place to fish. I started out thinking that maybe a drive-in lodge would be the place because most of them offer somewhat secluded fishing at half the cost of a fly-in lodge. However, the costs of these are still somewhat large for what I was looking to do (which was a 3 day/2 night trip). I just wanted a long weekend getaway.

Upon researching, I came across some camp grounds that offer tent sites with boat rentals. BINGO!!! These camps cost around $30-40 dollars per day plus the cost of the boat and motor rental which runs usually around $75-90 dollars a day, but split between two or three people that isn’t all that much. Camping is always fun, and you really never know who you will meet or what you will find. There is nothing better than sitting around a campfire in the evenings and sharing or listening to the big story of the day.

Another interesting option I found was in the form of a cabin/hotel type of accomodation which runs around $80 dollars per day for a cabin. This might be interesting to look into. One site that I found is located at North Star Lodge. It looks interesting, but this summer, I think I am gonna be all about the camp sites.

A couple of sites I found are JR’s Portage Bay Camp and Jerry & Ellie’s Cedar Lake Camp. I am very interested in these two camps as the site looks nice and well kept. Another camp site that looks really nice and fun is Country Camping and Cabins. I am going to contact them to see if I can get any info about the place they have. It looks really cool and super fun, and at $50 bucks a day for a cottage, the price is pretty good.

So far I have about 3-4 pages in my fishing notebook filled. Yes…I have a fishing notebook where I keep interesting websites and locations that I might want to visit. The fishing notebook is a great place to keep all those ideas in one, manageable place that you can come back to at any time…BUT the fishing notebook is another post.

If anyone has heard about any of the camps mentioned in this post or has any ideas about another that I might have missed…leave me a comment and let me know. I am super excited about these mini-trips. SO MUCH FUN to be had this summer~!!!

Happy Fishing…and Camping

Our trip to Burntwood Lake Lodge in Manitoba, Canada was my first trek into the wild country of Canada. When my husband, Cody, expressed interest in taking me along on one of his week long trips to rough it and fish like crazy everyday all day in some remote location in a country I had never been before, I admit I was a bit weary. I mean, I like to fish…but I am a real girlie girl. I like shoes that are inappropriate for boats and mud and fish scales, and I like dresses and make-up and hot rollers As a matter of fact, my first thought may have been related to the luggage and weight limitations that the fly-in outpost camps give to their visitors. I was puzzled on the matter of fitting all the stuff I would need into one duffel bag.Regardless to say, I packed lighter than usual. There are many uses for 4 inch platform snake skin Jessica Simpson pumps, but fishing in Canada, sadly, is not on that list. I gave up on the idea of hot rollers and the like when I realized that the cabin we were staying in did not have actual electricity. A wood burning stove would keep us warm at night and we would have nice, warm showers. According to my husband, this was a real luxury, and I was appalled at his definition of luxury!!!

I must admit that I had a ton of fun shopping for gear and tackle. I did not have alot of the tackle that I would need for the trip so a trip to Cabelas Outfitters was imperative. Cabelas is an amazing store and I had such a great time shopping for tackle boxes, rain gear, boots, and that special, secret lure that would surely catch me the biggest fish of all time!!! In the end, I would quickly find out you only really need two lures when fishing in Canada, but I was prepared none the less. I am proud to say that, after a few more trips to Cabelas (and http://www.cabelas.com/), my collection of gear and tackle would make any fisherman or fisherbabe totally jealous.

Arriving at Burntwood Lake Lodge was an experience, because we had to fly in on a float plane. I had done this one other time in Alaska, and it was pretty fun then. This time I got a little air sick but ended up just fine. We threw our stuff in the cabin and headed to the Lake. That first afternoon turned up nothing major…I caught a 5 or 6 pounder right a way and then nothing else for the rest of the day. But, I knew it would get better!!!

After that first afternoon, the fish were caught in swarms. I bet I caught at least 200 walleye over the week and countless Northern Pike. Most of mine were smaller…I guess you have to put in the time and the trips to finally catch that monster….but I did catch an 8 – 9 pounder that last day. Even though I did not catch the monster, my husband caught numerous large Pike, as did my father in law and sister in law who were both in the other boat. I have to say, I did an amazing job of working that net, though!!

The camp and cabins turned out to be more than I could have hoped for, and the meals that the cook prepared for us were absolutely amazing, to say the least. We had steak, pork, potatoes, and many more delicious dishes. I will not get into the desserts, because I would be typing all night. The staff there were so awesome, and they really made the trip special. I cannot say enough great things about their service and great attitudes.

All in all, my first trip to Canada was so amazing that I have been dying to go back ever since we returned. We have another trip planned in May of this year, but that is not soon enough. I was completely hooked (pun intended) on Canada fishing that first evening when, after dinner, I sat down in front of the big picture window at the Lodge, cracked open an ice cold bottle of Labatt Blue Canadian Beer, and stared at the most amazing and peaceful sunset I had ever seen in my life. The fish were jumping, and I found myself in a state of mind that is not common these days…completely stress free and relaxed.

And as for all my worries about high heels and hot rollers, all it took was one tug on my line to change my way of thinking. There is no better feeling in the world than feeling that first bite…anything could be down there, and there is no better exercise for an imagination than having a fish on your line. PLUS, I really like my hiking boots from Cabelas…and my hubby things they are hot!!!

But now that I think about it, they really should make those boots in metallic snakeskin…then life really would be perfect!!!~
