A Look Inside My Tackle Box

My WorkshopNow that winter is here time to reorganize my gear for storage. Here is a look inside my tackle box and some of the lures and tools I use for spring, summer, and fall fishing.

Cank baits Here is a collection of crank baits, my Favorite ones being the two cranks that look like small perch. I’ve had alot of success with all the cranks shown, the strike king itsy bitsy minnow works great for crappie, the fire tiger color works best in any lighting condition, the blue fox minnows work well on the crappie, blue gill, and perch. The perch cranks that i mentioned before work on everything from bass, crappie, pike, pickerel, and big perch. I love feeling the strike of fish when reeling in a crank bait.

Luck "E" Strike Ring Worm KitHere Is the Luck “E” Strike ring worm kit. I purchased this kit from Bass Pro Shop and as I’ve said before this is the best plastic worm set and at a sweet price $5.99. We were very success full with this kit especially the blue colored worms in both sizes in fact a 3lb bass hammered the smaller ring worm and it seemed like the 2lb bass were hitting the larger ones, could there be a pattern here? Either way the verity this kit comes with I believe will catch fish anywhere. This is also a great kit for someone who hasn’t used plastic worms before. It’s easy to use and comes with every thing you need to rig many different ways. (Highly Recommended)

Topwater FrogsThis top water frog set was something new I’ve never tried before and I’m still learning how to use them. We’ve had many hits with these frogs but have yet to land one. This Was a Great buy All frogs shown came in one kit can’t remember which store I ordered this kit from but I can tell you it was either Bass Pro Shop or Cabela’s.

other luresHere are other lures which we’ve used over and over, such as the banjo minnow. The banjo minnow catches fish and has great action but I find those weed guard rubber bands a pain in the butt. The plastic lizards are great lures we use them without weights and run them over the top of lillypads and the fish just hammer them, also if you let them sink just bellow the surface and slow retrieve you’ll catch those lazy fish that are not in feeding mode. in this box there is a chatter bait and other odds and ends.

tube kitThis box contains another kit by Luck “E” Strike, It’s there tube kit i bought this for two reasons. One I’ve never used them before and two there being used more and more in the ice fishing world. Again this kit comes with everything you need to start fishing with tubes, cost a little bit more than the ring worm kit but worth every penny to learn something new. Also pictured here are some bobbers that were on sale at Walmart for twenty five cents, and a Lindy worm blower.

rods and reelsHere are a few of my rods and reels all cleaned and ready for storage, (Not all rods shown) Now that My gear is organized and ready for the spring and summer months it’s time to prep all the ice fishing gear .

This Fisherbabe LOVES Her $30 Dollar Rod…

…and cannot understand why everyone makes fun of her when she states “I fish with an Ugly Stik“!!!!! I mean, I understand that there are more expensive and fancier rods out there. But I know that my Ugly Stik will hold up and serve me well. SO WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL?????

I am starting to become a little hurt and maybe even offended by some of the remarks I get when I pledge my allegiance to Ugly Stik Rods. I mean…ok so ya…I have been a little ticked off at the company lately because they will not make MY PINK ROD…but that is another issue that I will not go into again here!!! I just wanna know why its so bad that I love my cheap, old ugly stik.

Some of the most recent responses I have received are:

“You are NOT serious”

“You cannot possibly be serious”

“Why do you fish with that cheap, old thing”

“Do you know anything about fishing gear”

“Oh sweet thang…you need serious help”

and my favorite…”Awwwww…that is SOOO cute”

Now…I will not deny that I like being called cute, but Ugly Stiks are not cute…and I am not cute for using one. I am just a fisherbabe who likes products that are dependable, sturdy, trustworthy, strong, and capable. I like companies that have strong reputations for good products and great customer service.

I fish in locations that are remote and isolated. There are no corner marinas or tackle shops. I get dropped off by a float plane in the middle of an island with the instructions to “lay out a tarp if there is an emergency and we will get to you in a day or two.” This is not a place in which you want your gear to break down.

So I use Ugly Stiks because I trust them. I know that they will work. I know that under most circumstances my rod will last me not only this trip but MANY trips to come…and all for under $30.00!!! What can beat that!!

Now this post is not meant to insinuate that my choice is better than anyone elses. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of rods that I would like to try someday. I would really like to fish with a St. Croix rod and a G. Loomis rod. I would LOVE to try them out and see how they stand up to my kind of fishing trips!! I am sure they would be awesome!!

I know that, if I ever get to try these new rods, I will be super impressed and they will work beautifully. But I also know that I will have an ugly stik hidden away in my rod case…just in case.

So I wanna know…What kinds of rods do you fish with and what have been your favorites over the years??? Has anyone ever given you a hard time for liking your favorite gear??? Feel free to join in if you are into another sport and tell us what comments you have encountered with your gear choices!!!!

Happy Commenting ~

This One’s For The Girls…

It’s been a LONG time since I did a post for all the fisherbabes out there, but I thought this would be the perfect time to discuss some of my favorite products that I LOVE for all those trips where running water may not be a luxury that is afforded. These products are also great for camping or in those particular situations where the bathrooms are so EEEEWWWWYY that they do not require an explanation…you all know which ones I mean!! Britney Spears may love to party barefoot on nasty infested bathroom floors, but this diva does not!!! So the following products are ones that I have found to be essential to ensuring that I still feel like princess even when sitting in the outhouse!!

1. Neutrogena Make-Up Remover Wipes

These are THE BEST make-up remover wipes that I have found on the market yet!! I have tried many, many different types of these wipes, but the Neutrogena brand has always been gentle and refreshing. These wipes are the best because they are resealable and very gentle. They do NOT need water to work as they are pre-moistened. PLUS, you do not need to rinse your face after using them. Therefore, these are the the MOST portable wipes that I found so far!! I even use them at home!!

http://www.neutrogena.com/

2. CoverGirl Lip Stains

I LOVE THESE STAINS!!! They really stay on!! I think they speak for themselves, and I even wear them when we go out because I know that I will not have to refresh them at all!! I really can just slide some chapstick on my lips throughout the night and be done!! This is really important when you’re on the water, because you still want to look pretty but who wants to take out a mirror or a compact. That’s just silly!! These are great because you put them on in the morning before heading to the lake and you’re done!! I suggest slicking any type of chapstick with a sunblock over the top for an all day dose of sun protection AND a nice sheen!!

http://www.covergirl.com/

3. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock

I am a huge fan of this sunblock because I have very sensitive skin. As I previously stated, I have used Neutrogena for many years because I know I can always count on the gentleness of the product. This sunblock is really great because it comes in protection up to 100!! Plus it also doubles as a great under makeup moisturizer!! Its dry touch which means its not at all greasy and great feeling on the skin!!

http://www.neutrogena.com/

4. Clinique SuperBalanced Make-Up

This is my favorite type of make-up for all kinds of reasons. First of all, it feels great on the skin because YOU CANNOT FEEL IT!! It’s the first makeup that I have found that really feels like you are wearing nothing when you have it on. It also stays on great all day!! I like to mix it with a moisturizer (50/50) and set it with a light pressed powder when I am on the water. I mean I LOVE to fish…but I wanna look pretty when I do it :)

http://www.clinique.com/

5. Colgate Wisps

These are great. They are pocket sized and can fit right into your tackle box. They have a bead of freshness in the middle and little bristles to clean and freshen after a meal in the boat…I mean every fishin’ diva knows that we are all so awesome that there is always a chance their boat mate might try to steal a kiss!! Better be ready girls!!

http://www.colgate.com/

6. Secret Clinical Strength Deodorant

Princesses have to smell sweet at all times. Close your ears if you are reading this guys so you can keep thinking girls don’t sweat!!

Even if you do not need prescription strength deodorant, this is a smart buy. It allows you to wear those layers and layers of clothing without worrying about sweating!! Plus, if you are some place hot! hot! hot! it takes care of you in your bikini!!!

http://www.secret.com/

7. Green Rootine Dry Shampoo (Sephora)

I LOVE DRY SHAMPOOS…and this one has the brush attached. How Convenient!! This shampoo cleans and refreshes hair without the use of water!! We all know weight limits are a problem when you are flying into a great fishing location. You cannot afford to bring along extra cosmetics and hair supplies. However, this does not mean we want to look like old hags by the end of the week. This dry shampoo comes in two different colors (light and dark) and works so well to refresh hair mid week!! Beautiful hair and big fish…what fisherbabe could ask for more!!

For all you blonde fisherbabes like me, I also want to suggest a cheap alternative. Sometimes, if I do not have time to shop before leaving, I will just throw some loose translucent power in my bag with a brush. This works great for blondes and gives you a quick lift and the appearance of a highlight. Plus, its quick and cheap!!

http://www.sephora.com/

8. Smooth Away Hair Removers

Ok Girls…I saved the best for last. This thing is a miracle!!! They really do work and come in sizes that fit perfectly for legs, underarms, and the bikini area. I HATE not being able to take my razor and shaving cream along with me on the trip. But the weight restrictions suck. PLUS I never like to put chemicals into the lake that aren’t ABSOLUTELY necessary. This product ensures a sexy, goddess like hair-free body even 4 days into a 10 day (running water-less) fishing trip in the wild!!

http://www.getsmoothaway.com/

Ok Girls…there you have them – my all time favorite products to keep your inner princess happy the whole time you fish.

Guys – I apologize for the girlie post, but even you guys should use the sunblock!!! Have a great rest of your weekend!!

Happy Shopping ~

Ok…Just Being Pink Is Not Enough…

Just because I am a woman and I like pink things does not mean that I do not expect the same gear specifications that are available for men. You have all heard this before many times…in reference to just about anything they sell for women who fish. I hate to say it…but so far and from what I have seen…the selection is pretty disappointing.
The places that I fish are beautiful and full of natural wonder, but they are often harsh locations with no other people for hundreds of miles. Seriously, one time they told my husband and father in law to set an island on fire if there was an emergency, because that was the only way anyone would know they were in trouble. There is certainly no corner tackle shop to run to when a piece of gear falters or fails. This means that when I go fishing, I must take gear and tackle that I truly trust and believe in. So that means that I buy manly gear.
I guess in fishing there is no real gender separation because for many years now it has been a sport that has been dominated by men. Therefore, I can understand why companies do not make or market products for women. The ones that do market towards women, most commonly market men’s product in a smaller, shrunken down size. They think this is sufficient. I have news guys…women are not made like men! Apparently this is a common misconception around the world of fishing product makers.
Now…do I truly need pink gear…well it would be super cool, but no. Would I like gear that fits my hands so that I can handle my rod and reel more effectively…YES!!! Would I like gloves that mold to my hands the way my husbands mold to his without leaving at least an inch in the fingertips…YES!!! Would I like pants that fit me properly and do not leave a large amount of room in the “crotchal region”…OMG YES!!!!
All this being said, I would like to give an example of some fishing gear from Shakespeare. Now, I love my Ugly Stiks. I do not use any other rods because I know that the quality you get from Shakespeare is unmatched. The service you get is also unmatched. They are a great company with a solid history of caring about the sport of fishing and their customer. I will probably never switch to another rod. My entire family is Ugly Stik die-hards. That’s the way it is when we find something we believe in…we stick with it!!!
However…look at this new rod they are now selling for ladies.
I am seriously upset that someone FINALLY made a pink rod and they do not even make it in the same specifications as the typical men’s rod. THEY DO NOT EVEN HAVE ONE THAT IS EFFECTIVE FOR 20 POUND TEST!!! Are you kidding me? Do they think that women do not want to catch HUGE fish? What if I had a 150 pound tarpon on my line (as my step mother in law did), should I just not fish for that kind of fish and let the big, strong men handle it? That is offensive to me.
A second horrible thing about these rods is that most of them break down into two pieces which means…they have a bigger chance of actually “breaking down” when you catch that fish of a lifetime. It’s a known fact that collapsible rods are not as strong as ones that are all one piece because of the pressure put on the place where the rod comes apart.
Another crappy problem with this rod is that the only 5′6 model available collapses. I only fish with 5′6 BCL 1100 ugly stiks. That is all. They are smooth and easy to handle, and I love them. However, I cannot have it collapsing on me. I really wish they had not made these poles collapsible at all. I mean the choices are insane…I can either get a tiny 4′0 or 5′0 rod or an enormous 6′0 or 6′6 rod. There is nothing in between that comes in one piece.
They are also selling combos now. I will not even get into those…I do not want to compare what they are offering to my shimano cardiff reel, because I will not have nice things to say at all. They do not even offer a baitcaster in their combos. They offer spinning combos and one closed face reel that comes pre-spooled…most likely not with 25 pound test. Oh…and they call it Ladyfish!! Come on now…really?
Perhaps, I am just mad because they are not making exactly what I want. I will commend the company for caring about breast cancer and supporting finding a cure. As I said before, this company is one that is solid and trustworthy, and obviously cares. But I just wish that, if they are going to make stuff for the ladies, they make the same stuff as they have been for men. There are all types of ladies out there, and we need all types of gear. The truly offensive thing is the action of the rods. It’s like they are saying to me…women aren’t good enough to handle the big fish so you don’t need a rod that holds 25 pound test.
Well, I have news guys…I am woman enough to need 100 pound test, and someday I am going to catch a fish big enough to need it!!!
Happy Rod Shopping and Happy Saturday~

New tacklebox

Sooooo…before my trip, I bought a new tacklebox. It is a Plano 9606 and it is AMAZING!!! Before I had one that included a flip top with insertable trays. However, it was very hard to see all my lures and to get to the lure I needed I had to pull all the trays out because I could never remember which lure was in what case. At one point, I was tripping over all those trays laid out in the boat. To say the least, I felt it was a mess.

So…before this last trip, I bought a new one. Boy is it AWESOME!!! The new tackle box is all one peice with no trays. It boasts 6 extra large trays that make up to 74 areas for lures. It comes with double closure (one on each side) to ensure that the case closes securely.
Now…I do not know about all of you but I need 74 areas. As a matter of fact…I need 740 areas but I will work with the 74. I like to have a wide array of lures available to me at any point and time…and I love for them to all be organized and color coordinated. Color coordination in a tackle box is important.
Bass Pro Shops user reviews gives this tackle box a 4.5 out of 5 STAR rating. A few reviews say things like:
“This box is huge and durable…”
“This is a great tackle box with lots of room…”
“Has plenty of room for all types of tackle…”
“Sturdy and Spacious…”
and my favorite…
“This is THE Box…”
I am in total agreement with all of the above user reviews. This box did replace my old one quite adequately. I do admit to feeling pretty sad about leaving my old box at home. I thought maybe its feelings were hurt that I did not want to take it fishing anymore. But Oh Well…I needed a better place to store my pretty fish food.
The best thing about this tackle box is that it closes up nicely and pushes up against the side of your boat and stay pretty much out of the way while you fish. There are no trays all over the boat. AND most importantly, I found that it made a nice pillow for those long trips across a big lake.
It unfortunately only comes in green and beige. As you all may have guessed…I was really looking for something in PINK!!! So my next question is…of course…can you paint tackleboxes with spray paint? LOL…

If We Each Have Our Own Heavens…Mine Is Definately Cabelas…

Or maybe the shoe department at Nordstroms…Or maybe…a combo store that sells Orange Hammers AND Manolo Blahniks…YES…Oh YES!!!
Anyways…back to reality…I cannot believe that our trip is over…sigh…I am so sad!! Right now, I am staring at my tackle box to see what needs to be replaced. I used so many hammers over the week and now FOUR…yes FOUR…no longer have paint or not much paint anyways!! I also lost 2 very good orange and chartreuse colored red-eyes (one that I CUSTOM painted) when my crummy steel leaders broke. So my list as of now contains:
1. More Hammers
2. Generic colored (orange and chartreuse) red eyes
3. Better steel leaders…the ones that actually lock in and not just around…stupid leaders lost me a big fish :(
4. More Hammers
5. LINE (2o lb test because I ran out and 10 lb test in case I talk ANYBODY into fishing with me around here soon)
6. Silver colored red-eyes (so that I may once again painstakingly custom paint a FABULOUS lure…I mean…if I were fish I would totally wanna eat my hand made lures)
7. More Hammers
8. Another Shimano Cardiff 200A (ok…this one is wishful thinking but I am hoping that SOMEBODY will take the hint for my BIRTHDAY or ANNIVERSARY that is soon approaching!!)
9. A Pink 5′6 Pistol Grip Ugly Stick that does not collapse into 2 peices (oh wait…I CANNOT BUY THIS BECAUSE IT DOES NOT EXIST…dammit)
10. More Hammers
As you all can see, my list contains some very important things as well as some things that will remain on the list for a while. I looked for the pink ugly stick forever before I realized it does not exist. Perhaps someday in the near future Shakespeare will realize that I catch fish as large as my husband and that yes…I do like pink…but I still want gear that is equal to or better than that of the men.
Ok moving on…so I am picking these things up at a Cabela’s near me soon. I love Cabelas…walking in and smelling the fishing line and lures and tackle takes me to my happy place…
I will be posting some more photos of my trip as soon as I can get a collage together…probably tonight!!! Check back soon to see them and have a great day!!!

I Am Completely Offended and Frustrated…

by the fact that there are no cool and interesting clothes for women who fish. I have been searching and searching for weeks trying to find some waterproof pants that would be good for fishing and have good mobility and stretch without making me look like an enormous puffy man. My question is always why can’t they make a good quality “ski or board” type pant for us fisherbabes out there? I mean something that lets our men know that they have an actual woman in the boat with them and not just their old fishing buddy Bob?

Now I love ski and board type pants for fishing for several reasons. First of all, the have a nice amount of pockets on them that zip or fasten. This is important for us ladies because we like to keep things like chapstick and a compact mirror handy and within easy grabbing reach. And…besides our own things…we have to keep chapstick, sunscreen, and other small items for our guys who think they won’t need them but by the middle of the day are begging for just a swipe of your pink tinted chapstick. This means you carry two types of chapstick to save him the embarrassment of wearing lip gloss in all his pictures with his 50 inch fish!!

Secondly, ski or board type pants have a great fit for women. They cup and enhance and show off our good bits and hide the wobbly ones. They have a great line straight from the hip to shoe which ensures that any body type looks very chic. Also, they are usually a bit higher waisted which ensures a nice showing off of the booty area and less showing off of the usually a problem tummy area.

Thirdly, this pant is waterproof AND warm all on its own. Usually just one thin base layer is good enough to keep you plenty warm while moving down those slopes. This means that you do not have three pairs of jeans and a pair of hikers underneath your rain pants. Believe me…I look much slimmer and much hotter in my ski pants that my 8 pairs of base layers and Cabelas Khakis underneath my thick gore-tex rain pants…why can’t we just get an all in one style so we don’t all look like elephants. I mean…elephants are cute…but they aren’t sexy!!!

Another good thing about this type of pant is that they are usually made of some sort of waterproof, yet stretchy material. Which means your man gets to appreciate the tight butt while you are still able to move around and be totally comfortable. They are sexy and comfortable…which almost never happens in fashion as is proven by the lovely but torturous stiletto heel. This “sexy yet comfy” combo never occurs with outdoorsy type clothing.

The final and most important reason I think there needs to be this type of pant made for us fisherbabes is because the pants are the most important part of the fishing outfit. Yes…I said outfit!! Girls are girls regardless of whether they are dressed up in fancy lace lingerie or hitting the lake with her boys. I think a sexy girl should be able to feel like her sexy self no matter the setting she is in. It is my personal belief that more women do not fish because of the nasty crap that goes into it like the gross over sized clothing that you are expected to wear. Now… I am sorry, but if I have to mess with fish guts and blood…I wanna look freakin fabulous while I’m doing it…

And this is why I am frustrated by my lack of great fishing fashion. You boys look so super sexy in your tight jeans and sexy rain gear…with your baseball caps on and your sunglasses and us girls just look like a big blob of coveralls and over sized boots. I guess I will keep searching…maybe I should design my own line of fabulous yet perfectly suitable fishing fashion for women…hmmmmmmmm…

Happy Shopping…
