Okay…So I Love Canadian Fishing…

everybody knows that right??? Well remember last year when we got frozen off our lake and had to reschedule…weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllll we rescheduled for THIS MAY!!! It’s already half way through January, and I am chomping at the bit to GO GO GO!!!
To make matters worse (or better depending on your perspective), today we recieved the information and suitcase tags for our upcoming trip. In case you can’t remember, we are going to Lake Waskiaowaka this year with Dunlop’s Fly In Fishing. Now…there are a number of reasons that I am excited about this trip with the foremost being that I am POSITIVE that I am going to pull out a 52 inch PIKE!! I mean…I even had a dream about it last night, and it was a monster. That has to be some kind of sign right…God wants me to catch that fish…LOL :) jk…maybe :)
Anyways, I have been thinking about this trip a lot recently…probably because it is winter and B-O-R-I-N-G around here. I have been so busy I can’t get out to ice fish…and I certainly can’t find my way to Canada to ice fish anytime soon which is what I really, really want to do.
All I am doing these days is staring at photos like this…
and thinking that my 52 incher is gonna kick this fish’s a**…LOL :)
So I am left with dreaming about my trip in May, hoping that I don’t get frozen off again, and wondering…is it too soon to start packing????
Happy Daydreaming,

Something Fun & Fabulous For The New Year…

is what I was looking for today when I tried to make a list of potential bloggy-type topics for upcoming blog posts. I always like to have a list of possibilities on hand, because as I am sure all you lovely blogging friends know, sometimes your mind just draws a blank when it is time to sit down and write.
Soooo…today I sat down to make my list of possibilities for the upcoming few weeks, and all of a sudden it came to me…KNOTS. Yes…fishing KNOTS!!! What is more exciting than that right…LOL :) Well okay…fishing knots are probably not the MOST exciting part of your fishing adventures, but they are, however, one of the most important. I, for one, know how important a good, tight, clean knot is to catching that big monster trophy fish. Boy…do I know!!!
When I first started fishing as a young girl, I fished mostly for smaller species. I grew up in Arkansas and mostly fished little farm ponds with my awesome fishermom. Although, knots were VERY important in catching and keeping a fish then, I never REALLY understood the importance of a great knot until I fished for the first time in Canada.
Upon learning that I would be traveling to Manitoba’s Burntwood Lake Lodge for my very first week long fishing trip for Northern Pike, my fisherhubby and I immediately went to Cabelas and stocked up on new products from our my favorite brands. Ugly sticks and Shimano Reels were the first items to go into the cart. Then came the Plano Tackle Box and the HUNDREDS AND HUNDRES AND HUNDREDS of beautiful, fabulous lures that I was sure would catch me that major trophy for which I was hunting…Ahhhhhh the lovely dreams of the young and naive…LOL :)
Before we left for the wild, my hubby sat me down one night and asked me to show him how I tied my fishing knots. I excitedly took out my Berkely line and showed him my fabulous knot. He just stared at me…and the he laughed!!!! YES…my little a** of a husband laughed at me…LOL :)
To cut a long story short, I quickly learned that the trusty knots I had previously counted on were no longer going to cut it in the wilds of Canada. And…as offended as I was to have my technique laughed at, I quickly realized upon catching (and losing) my first large Pike to not underestimate the small things like knots when fishing. Every little procedure and technique adds up to something great when fishing. The knot you decide to use when fishing should be one that you absolutely trust without a doubt regardless of the size or type of fish that you are hunting. You just never know when you are going to hook something truly amazing, and when that happens, the stability of your knot should be the last thing on your mind.
Sooooo…because knots are so important to our lovely little sport, and since there are so many different types of knots in the fishing world today, I came up with a FABULOUS & FUN idea…
I WANT TO TRY OUT YOUR FAVORITE FISHING KNOT!!!!!

To do this little series, I will, of course, need help from all of my lovely readers out there!!! I am asking all my readers to send me the directions for tying their favorite fishing knots. You can give the directions either by leaving a detailed comment on this blog post or by emailing me the directions to fisherbabestaff@fisherbabe.com. I will then post a new knot with the directions and the name of the source once a week here on “From The Fisherbabe”. Accompanying the post will either be detailed pictures or video footage of the knot being tied.
I really think that this is going to be a fun little series to do, and if you take a look at my lovely little side bar, I have made a new link for the knot tying series for easier access. The name of the series is “FABULOUS & FUN FISHING KNOTS”. I will be posting my favorite knot next week for the first demonstration in the series.
I hope to get TONS of instructions for knot-tying and please feel free to send MULTIPLE instructions if you have lots of different favorite knots!!! OOOOOOOOO…I just can’t wait!!! Sooooo…get to knot tying peoples, and PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me in on the fun!!!
Happy Knot Tying ~

New Years Eve…

has arrived!! Tomorrow is the beginning of a new year…fresh starts and new goals, and BOY…do I have plenty!!
I am traveling out to Sidney, Nebraska next week. I am really looking forward to going even though it is only for one night! I am sure some of you know that Sidney is the home of the very first Cabela’s Store and is where the headquarters is located. I remember my very first trip to Cabela’s, and it was to the one in Sidney. I was completely hooked that first trip, and now I am excited to go back for a little visit. Wandering around and looking at all the interesting and awesome lures, baits, and gear is exactly the relaxing evening I need :)
Along with new promises, hopes, and goals, the new year brings a fresh new season of fishing and outdoor shows, and I just adore them all!!! The All Canada Show will be coming to Omaha in February, and I am already getting excited for it. Another show that is fun to attend is The Safari Club Show. I am not a hunter, but I really like the show that this organization puts on. Plus, each show offers beer for sale which makes any time a funner time…LOL ;)
I will definitely be covering each and every show I attend here on “From The Fisherbabe”, and I might even do a few video blogs. It would be very fun and very interesting to interview a couple of the lodge and camp owners at each show. They always have something interesting to tell you about fishing!!! I am so excited already!!!
I hope you all have a great, fun evening tonight, but please be very careful and safe. I know, as well as anyone, that beer makes for a super fun time…but PLEASE do not drink and drive. Remember to assign a designated driver before the night begins and allow only that person to control the keys. If you have no designated driver, please call a taxi to drive you safely home. Also remember that, although you may be responsible, safe and sober tonight, there may be someone else on the road who is not. Watch out for others who may not cherish their lives quite as much as we all cherish yours.
Happy New Year ~

Another Fabulous Year…

has come and gone, but what an incredible year it has been. Seriously…one of my best ever!!! Let’s review shall we????
First of all, “From The Fisherbabe” was born in February of this marvelous year. Yep, folks…that’s right!! It has only been 10 short, FABULOUS months since I began blogging my little fishing heart out right here on http://www.fisherbabe.com/. I cannot believe that, in just a few short months, I have met some of the friendliest, kindest, loveliest people I will ever hope to meet in my life. Seriously…you guys are FANTASTIC. I have learned so much from each and every one of you and hope that in the new year, I get to know each of you a little bit more!!!
You know…when I started this blog, I was a bit anxious about how it would go over…and about how I would be received by fishermen and fisherwomen in the industry. I mean, I do not tournament fish…which is usually the calling card of a “professional fisherman or fisherwoman.” I was afraid that, because I did not fish for bass regularly and preferred the wilderness of Canada hunting for Northern Pike, Lakers, and Walleyes, no one would take me seriously. What a silly notion that was!!!!
You guys have been amazing…teaching me something lovely with every comment and with every email and most importantly, teaching me that fishing is an industry of acceptance and flexibility. It is a sport of your making with room for all types of regular folks and all types of “professionals.” I have learned that, although there are still a few “good old boys (and girls)” who refuse to accept that a girl like me can outfish them (or thier hubbys) blindfolded with an arm tied behind my back and be a credible fishing source, 99.99999% of the industry is SERIOUSLY FABULOUS!!!! You all have given me the incredible gift of that realization…thank you all so much for that precious gift!!!
This blog is one of the happiest parts of my life. Sharing my passion for the sport of fishing is something I look forward to everyday. I hope that you will all keep coming back in the new year!!!
Let’s see…what else ~ Oh YEAH!!! I broke all of my freshwater records this year. I mean…that within itself is an amazing feat. I caught 11 Master Angler sized fish in 6 days in Manitoba in May/June 2009. My biggest measured in at 43.5…and I caught 3 that size!!! The biggest of the 3 weighed 19 pounds, so I still have goals for 2010 LOL :) !! I have to break that 20 pound mark, for sure. Oh…and a 52 incher would be FABULOUS!!!
I also went Lake Trout fishing in September at MacKay Lake up in Northwest Territories, Canada, and broke the 20 pound freshwater barrier with a 25 pound Lake Trout. I also reeled in a 23 pounder, a couple of 18 pounders, and countless other teen sized Lakers. This trip also provided me with my first glimpse of the Northern Lights (or the Aurora Borealis in scientific speak). They were…simply amazing!! :)
Other great things that happened this year include obtaining some fabulous new reels, a fabulous new plano rod case, learning to crochet, taking a cruise to Mexico, turning 30-1, and venturing into video blogging (which I fully intend to do more of in 2010)!!!
So, as you can all see, 2009 was pretty great to me. Seriously great!!! I hold so much hope for 2010 to be even more fabulous, if that is possible!!! I am planning some great things for the blog…a redesign is in the works…and I really want to kick http://www.fisherbabe.com/ up to the next level…whatever that means LOL :)
I really hope all of you had a great 2009, as well!! Please comment and tell me some great stuff that happened to you in 2009!!!
Happy Fishing in 2010 ~
