I LOVE FISHING TRIPS…

and not only because of the amazing fishing that will inevitably occur. I mean…that is GREAT, but I also love the anticipation leading up to the day we will finally pack up the truck and head out. I love washing all my gear and shuffling through my tacklebox and the trips to Cabelas. All of these things are soooo much fun and make the trip feel as though it will last forever.

When my family plans a trip, we do everything ourselves. There are no travel agents or guides, and this makes it more fun and adventurous for me. That is not to say that travel agents and guides are not useful…some people swear by them, and I can understand that!! For me, however, the adventure starts the day I decide to take a trip and does not end until I return home. Because my family does all our own planning, the excitment and anticipation surrounding our trip can last for MONTHS!!

In honor of our AWESOME upcoming trip to Mackay Lake in Northwest Territories, I have decided to do a 5 part series entitled “How To Plan Your Own Do-It-Yourself Fishing Trip.” The series will include sections on researching and picking a lake and lodge, ordering maps and navigating lakes, packing and grocery shopping, the importance of good gear and tackle, and other essential tips for planning a self guided trip.

Although the terms “self guided” and “do-it-yourself” often evokes an absolute sense of fear in people, it is really a very simple and rewarding experience. Being prepared and educated before you go is the way to combat most uncomfortable situations that can arise on these types of trips. Fear is never a reason to not experience the feeling of pride that comes from truly being one with nature.

The sense of accomplishment that comes from this wild adventure is one that has been felt by explorers for hundreds (if not thousands) of years. We owe it to ourselves to experience life to the fullest. I never feel more alive or blessed than when I stand on an island in the middle of a lake that only a handful of people in the world have also stood on.

In my opinion, we should all be so lucky to experience that feeling. I hope you enjoy the series, and that it serves to alievate any fears you may have about amping up the adventure in your life…whatever that may mean to you!!

Check back tomorrow for Part One in the “How To Plan Your Own Do-It-Yourself Fishing Trip” series entitled “RESEARCH – The Fundamentals Of Choosing A Good Location.

Happy Planning ~

The Fisherbabe Went To Cabelas…

and it was GREAT!!! For my 5th…yes I said FIFTH…wedding anniversary this year, I asked my fisherhubby to get me another Shimano Cardiff 200A Fishing Reel. I love these reels. They are amazingly smooth and very easy to use. PLUS – they are very manageable and maneuverable for my tiny little fingers. I have nothing but fabulous things to say about them. Obviously, I love them, because I asked for one for a BIG anniversary.
I was very disappointed when I arrived at Cabelas and found out they did not have my present in stock. They should have known I was coming, right? However, the sales guy was impressed with the fact I knew anything about fishing and waived the shipping price just for me. Therefore, next week I will have a brand new and very shiny Shimano Cardiff arriving at my door. YAY!!!!
Also while I was there, I bought some new Trilene Vanish which has the slogan of being the easy casting Fluorocarbon Line. I have been wanting to try some new types of line. I like Trilene and was happy to see that this type of line was available from a trusted and well known company.
I, of course, wanted to grab a few more orange hammers while I was there, but, unfortunately, they only had 2 in stock. I guess maybe they are catching on ;) I also bought a couple red and white Cabelas Canadian Casting Spoons. I cannot go to Cabelas without purchasing new lures…it just is not possible.
I always have a good time at Cabelas. I checked the Pink Ugly Stiks just in case something had changed in the last day…but NO!! Still none of the ones that I use. I almost broke down and bought the 6′0 one, but I just could not bring myself to give in. I will just have to wait…and hope.
I hope you all had as great a day as I did today. A trip to your favorite store is always a great way to spend the day.

Coming Soon To A Fisherbabe Blog Near You…

My blog is starting to come together and there are some exciting new things I am planning. I wanted to take a moment to share with all of you a few of the things that are coming soon!!!

First of all, I know that many of you are supporters and fans of www.GetReeled.com. One of the most exciting things happening here soon is an exclusive interview with the creator of www.GetReeled.com who will be launching a brand new site very soon. This new site offers many opportunities for anglers to find all the information they need in one place. It also offers businesses that cater to anglers the chance to get their name out there and an easy way for them to advertise what they have to offer us.

I have had the chance to preview this site before it launches. We all love GetReeled.com and I am certain that you will love this site just as much!!
Secondly, I am planning to add webshows to my blog really soon!!! There are all kinds of tips and tricks and trips to Cabela’s that I want to show and a webcast seems to be the perfect addition to the blog. The first webcast will be added within the next week or two and will center around learning how to tie the very special “Lay Knot”. This knot is strong, effective, and durable when tied correctly. I am very excited to start these webcasts with this awesome knot-tying technique.
Finally, I am excited to add posts reviewing even more tackle, gear, and fishing lodges/trips. I am looking forward to the summer months and all the fishing that comes with them!!! I plan to try out lots of new products and go to lots of new lakes!! There is nothing better than first hand knowledge to let you know how a product really works or how many fish there are in a certain lake or river. I am very excited to be the lucky girl that gets to find all that stuff out!!
Thanks to everyone who keeps reading and following and commenting!!! A blog isn’t popular without readers!! I cannot wait to get all this cool stuff up and posted soon!!!

If We Each Have Our Own Heavens…Mine Is Definately Cabelas…

Or maybe the shoe department at Nordstroms…Or maybe…a combo store that sells Orange Hammers AND Manolo Blahniks…YES…Oh YES!!!
Anyways…back to reality…I cannot believe that our trip is over…sigh…I am so sad!! Right now, I am staring at my tackle box to see what needs to be replaced. I used so many hammers over the week and now FOUR…yes FOUR…no longer have paint or not much paint anyways!! I also lost 2 very good orange and chartreuse colored red-eyes (one that I CUSTOM painted) when my crummy steel leaders broke. So my list as of now contains:
1. More Hammers
2. Generic colored (orange and chartreuse) red eyes
3. Better steel leaders…the ones that actually lock in and not just around…stupid leaders lost me a big fish :(
4. More Hammers
5. LINE (2o lb test because I ran out and 10 lb test in case I talk ANYBODY into fishing with me around here soon)
6. Silver colored red-eyes (so that I may once again painstakingly custom paint a FABULOUS lure…I mean…if I were fish I would totally wanna eat my hand made lures)
7. More Hammers
8. Another Shimano Cardiff 200A (ok…this one is wishful thinking but I am hoping that SOMEBODY will take the hint for my BIRTHDAY or ANNIVERSARY that is soon approaching!!)
9. A Pink 5′6 Pistol Grip Ugly Stick that does not collapse into 2 peices (oh wait…I CANNOT BUY THIS BECAUSE IT DOES NOT EXIST…dammit)
10. More Hammers
As you all can see, my list contains some very important things as well as some things that will remain on the list for a while. I looked for the pink ugly stick forever before I realized it does not exist. Perhaps someday in the near future Shakespeare will realize that I catch fish as large as my husband and that yes…I do like pink…but I still want gear that is equal to or better than that of the men.
Ok moving on…so I am picking these things up at a Cabela’s near me soon. I love Cabelas…walking in and smelling the fishing line and lures and tackle takes me to my happy place…
I will be posting some more photos of my trip as soon as I can get a collage together…probably tonight!!! Check back soon to see them and have a great day!!!

Hello Old Friends…

WOW…it took a long time to get my damn computer back!!! But I am so glad to have it now. My old desktop is SO SLOW it takes a couple of hours to post one post and I usually got so frustrated that I just stopped in the middle.

But I am back now…and ready to talk fish!!! I am headed to Canada in May to fish for some Northern and maybe some Walleye…so I can’t wait to get started on the packing and the many trips to Cabelas and my local tackle shop to find the great new lures…although I usually tend to favor the oldies but goodies.

Stay tuned for more on my trip and I just wanted to write to say I AM GLAD TO BE BACK ONLINE…FINALLY!!!!
