Packing Light…

… is a tough feat to accomplish when your destination is the wild outdoors where it can be both hot and cold in the same trip. But, add on weight restrictions and groceries to the chore and all of a sudden packing becomes harder than solving the riddle of the sphinx. Although it can seem a bit overwhelming at times, making a list and packing early can solve much of the anxiety that can accompany this task.

The first thing to address when you are beginning to pack for a fishing adventure is the weather. You have to know what the weather will be like during the time of your stay. Obviously, there is no way to predict the future and know for sure whether it will be rainy or sunny, hot or cold. However, you can research past weather patterns and talk to the camp managers or owners about weather conditions presently and in the past. A great tool for checking the weather in different locations and countries is http://www.weather.com/. Also, camp managers and owners are great tools in understanding the conditions of the lake.

Even though you can try to guess whether the gods will shine on you and bring sun or whether they hate you and will throw ice pellets at you in july, its never a good idea to pack with only hot or cold temperatures in mind. With Canadian fishing, the temperatures can change drastically from day to day. Last year, on our Pike trip, my family spent a leisurely thursday fishing…and although it was not necessarily warm, it was pleasant. The very next day we woke up, looked outside, and were stunned. There was SNOW on the ground…AND it was still falling out of the sky :( Layers upon Layers were definitely necessary that day.

With weight restrictions being part of the process during these types of trips, you have to keep your clothing at a minimum. You need to make sure you take enough clothing to stay safe and warm, but no extra. Two pairs of jeans or pants usually do the trick…along with a couple tshirts. On top of those basics, you should think about carrying along a hooded sweatshirt and a fleece jacket of some sort. Thermal underwear is also a must as it protects your body’s core and keeps in the heat. Warm socks are important, as well. I suggest smartwool brand socks because they keep your feet warm with only one pair. If you put on too many pairs of socks, your feet will not stay warm because the layers of socks will cut off your circulation. Another simple option is a really warm light-weight boot. My husband has a pair of Irish Setters that are protected by a high degree of Thinsulate but are EXTREMELY light. They sell this boot at Cabelas. It’s amazing. Raingear is, of course, always a must, and if you are traveling someplace cold, bring along your coveralls. Warm gloves can help protect your hands from the icy air and are an important tool in keeping your fingers from frostbite.

It must be mentioned that these clothes will get dirty. When you are taking only a limited amount, you must resign yourself to wearing the same things day in and day out (with, of course, the exception of undies and socks :) . Remember…your rain gear is what gets the most disgusting. The clothes that you have on under the raingear usually stay dry and clean. Don’t be too concerned about wearing clothes with fish slime on them. If your rain gear is working properly, your clothes should be wearable for at least two to three fishing days at a time, and doing this REALLY saves a lot of weight.

Duffel bags are a must for this type of situation. Any type of regular suitcase (especially ones with any metal parts or rollers) just plain weighs too much. Those types of suitcases usually weight 10-20 pounds when empty. Thats a lot of lures and tackle you could be taking instead. Duffels only weigh a fraction of what the regular suitcase weighs and is so easy to carry and pack. If you buy a larger bag, everything from you clothes to your sleeping bag will fit inside. It is a must have for this type of trip.

My family always manages to keep our weight down under the restrictions. Yet, we always have everything we need to make for a great trip. Personal items such as shampoos and soaps can be shared by the group so that no one person has to carry the weight for all. Places like Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops carry microfiber towels that weight as little as an ounce. These towels will save you a pound or two if you are heading to a place with a shower but that does not provide towels. Sham-wow towels make for very light yet durable boat and cabin towels. I like to take along a flashlight. It gets pretty dark at night…and they have bears in Canada :)

You must remember that the weight limitations include everything. Your tackle box, gear, clothing, and groceries must all fall within the guidelines. Extrememly efficient packing is a must for a nice relaxing trip. When it comes to weight, every little bit saved helps. There is nothing worse than getting to the airport and finding out you are over. Such chaos ensues that I shudder to even think about it. The main tip to packing in these situations is to just think light. Really think about whether you really need an item or if it is just a luxury that you could possibly do without. AND ALWAYS WEIGH YOUR BAGS AND GEAR BEFORE YOU GO!!!!

On a side note, my tacklebox is so light that it weighs EIGHT POUNDS LESS than my old one. I use the Plano 9606. Its a hip-roof tackle box that has three pull out trays on each side and a deep space in the bottom for extras. This tackle box is very durable, and when fully loaded, only weighs about 20 pounds. Compare this to my hubby’s which weighs 30+ pounds and you can see that my tackle box really saves the weight. I always recommend this Plano box ,because it’s AWESOME!!

Another imporant tip to consider is to make a list. I always make a list a couple of weeks in advance of my trip. This allows me to really think about the weight restrictions while I considering my clothing and gear. That weight restriction usually has to encompass everything and is on a per person basis. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to inquire about any restrictions before you go. Nothing sucks worse than showing up and having to leave half your gear in the truck…trust me on that one.

For my trips, I usually try to stick with the least amount of clothing that I can get by with so that I have plenty of room for my gear. It must be stressed again that rain gear is a must have in any situation. The temperatures in Canada can get pretty dangerous, and rain gear is the first step in ensuring the warmth and safety of your body.

In the end, the best tip is just to make a list and really think about what you are packing. Because there are no stores around, you must prepare and pack everything that you need. Just do not go overboard and make sure you talk to the others in your group to ensure that there are no duplicate group items being taken along. Packing can be the funnest part of your pre-trip planning process, because it allows you to really get excited about where you are going and the fish you are about to catch.

Happy Packing ~

This Fisherbabe LOVES Her $30 Dollar Rod…

…and cannot understand why everyone makes fun of her when she states “I fish with an Ugly Stik“!!!!! I mean, I understand that there are more expensive and fancier rods out there. But I know that my Ugly Stik will hold up and serve me well. SO WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL?????

I am starting to become a little hurt and maybe even offended by some of the remarks I get when I pledge my allegiance to Ugly Stik Rods. I mean…ok so ya…I have been a little ticked off at the company lately because they will not make MY PINK ROD…but that is another issue that I will not go into again here!!! I just wanna know why its so bad that I love my cheap, old ugly stik.

Some of the most recent responses I have received are:

“You are NOT serious”

“You cannot possibly be serious”

“Why do you fish with that cheap, old thing”

“Do you know anything about fishing gear”

“Oh sweet thang…you need serious help”

and my favorite…”Awwwww…that is SOOO cute”

Now…I will not deny that I like being called cute, but Ugly Stiks are not cute…and I am not cute for using one. I am just a fisherbabe who likes products that are dependable, sturdy, trustworthy, strong, and capable. I like companies that have strong reputations for good products and great customer service.

I fish in locations that are remote and isolated. There are no corner marinas or tackle shops. I get dropped off by a float plane in the middle of an island with the instructions to “lay out a tarp if there is an emergency and we will get to you in a day or two.” This is not a place in which you want your gear to break down.

So I use Ugly Stiks because I trust them. I know that they will work. I know that under most circumstances my rod will last me not only this trip but MANY trips to come…and all for under $30.00!!! What can beat that!!

Now this post is not meant to insinuate that my choice is better than anyone elses. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of rods that I would like to try someday. I would really like to fish with a St. Croix rod and a G. Loomis rod. I would LOVE to try them out and see how they stand up to my kind of fishing trips!! I am sure they would be awesome!!

I know that, if I ever get to try these new rods, I will be super impressed and they will work beautifully. But I also know that I will have an ugly stik hidden away in my rod case…just in case.

So I wanna know…What kinds of rods do you fish with and what have been your favorites over the years??? Has anyone ever given you a hard time for liking your favorite gear??? Feel free to join in if you are into another sport and tell us what comments you have encountered with your gear choices!!!!

Happy Commenting ~

This One’s For The Girls…

It’s been a LONG time since I did a post for all the fisherbabes out there, but I thought this would be the perfect time to discuss some of my favorite products that I LOVE for all those trips where running water may not be a luxury that is afforded. These products are also great for camping or in those particular situations where the bathrooms are so EEEEWWWWYY that they do not require an explanation…you all know which ones I mean!! Britney Spears may love to party barefoot on nasty infested bathroom floors, but this diva does not!!! So the following products are ones that I have found to be essential to ensuring that I still feel like princess even when sitting in the outhouse!!

1. Neutrogena Make-Up Remover Wipes

These are THE BEST make-up remover wipes that I have found on the market yet!! I have tried many, many different types of these wipes, but the Neutrogena brand has always been gentle and refreshing. These wipes are the best because they are resealable and very gentle. They do NOT need water to work as they are pre-moistened. PLUS, you do not need to rinse your face after using them. Therefore, these are the the MOST portable wipes that I found so far!! I even use them at home!!

http://www.neutrogena.com/

2. CoverGirl Lip Stains

I LOVE THESE STAINS!!! They really stay on!! I think they speak for themselves, and I even wear them when we go out because I know that I will not have to refresh them at all!! I really can just slide some chapstick on my lips throughout the night and be done!! This is really important when you’re on the water, because you still want to look pretty but who wants to take out a mirror or a compact. That’s just silly!! These are great because you put them on in the morning before heading to the lake and you’re done!! I suggest slicking any type of chapstick with a sunblock over the top for an all day dose of sun protection AND a nice sheen!!

http://www.covergirl.com/

3. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock

I am a huge fan of this sunblock because I have very sensitive skin. As I previously stated, I have used Neutrogena for many years because I know I can always count on the gentleness of the product. This sunblock is really great because it comes in protection up to 100!! Plus it also doubles as a great under makeup moisturizer!! Its dry touch which means its not at all greasy and great feeling on the skin!!

http://www.neutrogena.com/

4. Clinique SuperBalanced Make-Up

This is my favorite type of make-up for all kinds of reasons. First of all, it feels great on the skin because YOU CANNOT FEEL IT!! It’s the first makeup that I have found that really feels like you are wearing nothing when you have it on. It also stays on great all day!! I like to mix it with a moisturizer (50/50) and set it with a light pressed powder when I am on the water. I mean I LOVE to fish…but I wanna look pretty when I do it :)

http://www.clinique.com/

5. Colgate Wisps

These are great. They are pocket sized and can fit right into your tackle box. They have a bead of freshness in the middle and little bristles to clean and freshen after a meal in the boat…I mean every fishin’ diva knows that we are all so awesome that there is always a chance their boat mate might try to steal a kiss!! Better be ready girls!!

http://www.colgate.com/

6. Secret Clinical Strength Deodorant

Princesses have to smell sweet at all times. Close your ears if you are reading this guys so you can keep thinking girls don’t sweat!!

Even if you do not need prescription strength deodorant, this is a smart buy. It allows you to wear those layers and layers of clothing without worrying about sweating!! Plus, if you are some place hot! hot! hot! it takes care of you in your bikini!!!

http://www.secret.com/

7. Green Rootine Dry Shampoo (Sephora)

I LOVE DRY SHAMPOOS…and this one has the brush attached. How Convenient!! This shampoo cleans and refreshes hair without the use of water!! We all know weight limits are a problem when you are flying into a great fishing location. You cannot afford to bring along extra cosmetics and hair supplies. However, this does not mean we want to look like old hags by the end of the week. This dry shampoo comes in two different colors (light and dark) and works so well to refresh hair mid week!! Beautiful hair and big fish…what fisherbabe could ask for more!!

For all you blonde fisherbabes like me, I also want to suggest a cheap alternative. Sometimes, if I do not have time to shop before leaving, I will just throw some loose translucent power in my bag with a brush. This works great for blondes and gives you a quick lift and the appearance of a highlight. Plus, its quick and cheap!!

http://www.sephora.com/

8. Smooth Away Hair Removers

Ok Girls…I saved the best for last. This thing is a miracle!!! They really do work and come in sizes that fit perfectly for legs, underarms, and the bikini area. I HATE not being able to take my razor and shaving cream along with me on the trip. But the weight restrictions suck. PLUS I never like to put chemicals into the lake that aren’t ABSOLUTELY necessary. This product ensures a sexy, goddess like hair-free body even 4 days into a 10 day (running water-less) fishing trip in the wild!!

http://www.getsmoothaway.com/

Ok Girls…there you have them – my all time favorite products to keep your inner princess happy the whole time you fish.

Guys – I apologize for the girlie post, but even you guys should use the sunblock!!! Have a great rest of your weekend!!

Happy Shopping ~

The Fisherbabe Went To Cabelas…

and it was GREAT!!! For my 5th…yes I said FIFTH…wedding anniversary this year, I asked my fisherhubby to get me another Shimano Cardiff 200A Fishing Reel. I love these reels. They are amazingly smooth and very easy to use. PLUS – they are very manageable and maneuverable for my tiny little fingers. I have nothing but fabulous things to say about them. Obviously, I love them, because I asked for one for a BIG anniversary.
I was very disappointed when I arrived at Cabelas and found out they did not have my present in stock. They should have known I was coming, right? However, the sales guy was impressed with the fact I knew anything about fishing and waived the shipping price just for me. Therefore, next week I will have a brand new and very shiny Shimano Cardiff arriving at my door. YAY!!!!
Also while I was there, I bought some new Trilene Vanish which has the slogan of being the easy casting Fluorocarbon Line. I have been wanting to try some new types of line. I like Trilene and was happy to see that this type of line was available from a trusted and well known company.
I, of course, wanted to grab a few more orange hammers while I was there, but, unfortunately, they only had 2 in stock. I guess maybe they are catching on ;) I also bought a couple red and white Cabelas Canadian Casting Spoons. I cannot go to Cabelas without purchasing new lures…it just is not possible.
I always have a good time at Cabelas. I checked the Pink Ugly Stiks just in case something had changed in the last day…but NO!! Still none of the ones that I use. I almost broke down and bought the 6′0 one, but I just could not bring myself to give in. I will just have to wait…and hope.
I hope you all had as great a day as I did today. A trip to your favorite store is always a great way to spend the day.

Happy Shopping ~

Coming Soon To A Fisherbabe Blog Near You…

My blog is starting to come together and there are some exciting new things I am planning. I wanted to take a moment to share with all of you a few of the things that are coming soon!!!

First of all, I know that many of you are supporters and fans of www.GetReeled.com. One of the most exciting things happening here soon is an exclusive interview with the creator of www.GetReeled.com who will be launching a brand new site very soon. This new site offers many opportunities for anglers to find all the information they need in one place. It also offers businesses that cater to anglers the chance to get their name out there and an easy way for them to advertise what they have to offer us.

I have had the chance to preview this site before it launches. We all love GetReeled.com and I am certain that you will love this site just as much!!
Secondly, I am planning to add webshows to my blog really soon!!! There are all kinds of tips and tricks and trips to Cabela’s that I want to show and a webcast seems to be the perfect addition to the blog. The first webcast will be added within the next week or two and will center around learning how to tie the very special “Lay Knot”. This knot is strong, effective, and durable when tied correctly. I am very excited to start these webcasts with this awesome knot-tying technique.
Finally, I am excited to add posts reviewing even more tackle, gear, and fishing lodges/trips. I am looking forward to the summer months and all the fishing that comes with them!!! I plan to try out lots of new products and go to lots of new lakes!! There is nothing better than first hand knowledge to let you know how a product really works or how many fish there are in a certain lake or river. I am very excited to be the lucky girl that gets to find all that stuff out!!
Thanks to everyone who keeps reading and following and commenting!!! A blog isn’t popular without readers!! I cannot wait to get all this cool stuff up and posted soon!!!
Happy Days Ahead and Tight Lines~
