How to Catch a Fish … Secrets Revealed!

fishfood

I am, by no means, great at fishing. I’ve gone out many times, usually with little to nothing to show for it. Therefore, I thought I’d ask the experts, just what IS their secret ?!

Ok, so I posed the question on both GetREELed.com (http://www.getreeled.com/forum/topics/strange-fishing-tips) and Facebook, “what’s the strangest thing you’ve done or used to catch a fish?” as I was curious to know what sort of weird stuff everybody was using (and maybe help myself out next time I get out on the water). I got some really great responses from a ton of people (thanks guys!!), and wanted to share some of the tips, techniques and bait with everyone.

So here goes … I hope everybody is taking notes:

  • Canned corn = panfish
  • Cigarette butts = perch (I don’t really recommend this approach due to environmental issues but apparently it did work)
  • Ketchup = randoms
  • Chicken fillets = bass and catfish
  • Chewed bazooka bubblegum = catfish
  • Chicken liver with Strawberry Koolaid = bluecat
  • Rolled oats = smelt
  • Marshmallows, Peas and Chopped weiners = randoms
  • French fries = tarpon
  • Cardboard = blowfish

So, that’s it for now. So get out there and try some of these yourself! As they say… There’s never a wrong way to catch a fish!

If you have any other tips, techniques or random bait that you’ve used to reel them in, I’d love to hear them.

Cheers & Happy Fishing everybody!

High Fishing Fashion…

waders1

… is something all of you understand that I strive for. Amazingly enough, the market on high fishing fashion has yet to be developed to,what I see at least, its full potential. I mean…Pink Hunter Wellington boots are very cute, but we can do better than that right?

Well…Prada seems to think so. For those of you who do not know what Prada might be, its a very expensive, very posh, very luxurious fashion house. They design amazing outfits that I cannot afford, but lust over ever spring and fall when they show their lines on the runways of all the major fashion forward cities of the world (none of which I have actually been to).

This season, Prada sent their models down the runway in very familiar boots…thigh high fishing waders. The rest of the outfit consisted of a very outdoorsy theme, but my eye was immediately drawn to the waders. Then, in the famous September Issue of the Premier fashion bible which is Vogue, waders (by another posh brand) are featured in a lovely outdoorsy photo spread.

My very favorites are the pairs of high heeled waders that are featured in the magazine. How lovely would it be to step out onto the shores of your favorite fishing hole with some of those babies on…Can anyone say HOTTT!!! Unfortunately, I can also imagine myself reeling in a fighting, fiesty fish and falling face first into the ice cold water.

So…although these waders do not seem exactly useable (or safe for that matter…) I do commend Prada for sending their lovely, leggy models down the runway in something one rarely sees, and more importantly, I commend Ms. Anna Wintour, the Editor-In-Chief at Vogue, for fusing my love for fashion with my love for fishing.

Happy Shopping ~

An American Girl In Canada…Part Deux

Ok…well not Canada but it was on our way to Canada so that counts!!! I got to visit Glacier National Park in Montana, and it was a blast. We mainly just drove through on our way up to Edmonton, but the sites were so beautiful that it was worth the extra hour it took to get there!!!!

The Fisherbabe and Fisherhubby

I saw the carved out areas where glaciers USED to be…and it was awe inspiring and sad at the same time.

I really love the scenic drives that come along with our trips up north. The scenery is always amazing. The little ponds and lakes on the sides of the roads always make me just throw my collapsible in the trunk and hit the road.

There were so many lovely waterfalls to be seen in Glacier National Park. They took a little walking to get to, but the beauty was worth the hike. This one is one that I did not get to, but my husband took my camera along on his hike and shot it for me. Isn’t it lovely?

We hiked along the riverbed to get to this little falls, and all I thought about the whole time was “I really hope a bear doesn’t get me…”!!! LOL :)

I am always worried about bears in Canada….even though I have never actually seen a bear in Canada. But it doesn’t hurt to be on the look out.

As we were leaving the park and heading down the road towards the Monster Fish, we stopped and looked back at the beautiful sunset behind us. I am so glad we did!!!!

This was one of the most fantastic scenes I have ever witnessed. The pink sky and silouette of the mountains made for a majestic site.

Kinda makes a person feel small…

If you ever get the chance to visit this beautiful National Park, I suggest doing so!!! On a more serious note, however, I suggest you go very soon. The Glaciers are receding so fast that I am very afraid that they will just be tales to tell my grandchildren.

Stayed tuned…tomorrow the post is all about fish porn. Oh yeah…I said fish porn!!!

Happy Evening ~

Fishing Dictionary

Picked up a pocket Dictionary the other day and I thought I’d share a few Definitions. Such as….

Fishing

1. n. The art of casting, trolling, jigging, or spinning while freezing, sweating, swatting or swearing.

Angler

1. n. One of two cold, wet, devious, and temperamental creatures of somewhat limited intelligence found at either end of a fishing line. See FISH

Fish

1. n. Remarkable aquatic animal typically weighing less than 10 pounds which, without gear, tackle, or equipment of any kind and using nothing more than hypnotic suggestion, can easily lure an angler as much as 50 times it’s size tens or even hundreds of miles into inhospitable terrain or unfamiliar waters and keep him there for hours with nothing more than a couple of false rises and a few practiced flicks of its tail.

Dusk

1. Brief twilight period that separates the time when fish don’t bite because they can see your line from the time when fish don’t bite because they can’t see your lure.

Strike

1. v. The thrilling moment when, with a quick rolling or lunging motion, an unseen finned quarry suddenly takes the hook of an angler fishing the spot you left five minutes ago.

This Dictionary is hilarious I found it sitting at the checkout counter at Boarders in the mall but this book can be found almost anywhere. Written by Henry Beard & Roy Mckie and published by Workman Publishing. Funny little book, you and your fishing buddies will love.

SET SET SET!

This is the story of me and my partners first time fishing together. After meeting Nate through my wife, We sat around had a few beers and talked about how we wish we were fishing. Since i had left all my fishing gear in Florida when i moved up I knew I would have to buy all new equipment. So the next day I went online to research all the species of fish here in Vermont and what are the best ways to catch them. after learning what I needed to get I went to Dicks Sporting Goods And Walmart to purchase 2 fishing rods some simple hooks in a variety of sizes and split shot weights some slip bobbers (Which I never used before) and Some Simple red and white bobbers. with all the basics in hand I went home to prep the lines so we would be good to go.

We set it up on what was a nice weekend with possible light showers, which we weren’t concerned with. We met at Nate’s house since he lives right down the road from were we where going, we filled our coffee cups and Headed out. Now keep in mind this was a point before spring at the tail end of winter. we first looked for a good spot to start fishing. there was a extension of the land that formed a cove to the left and right, perfect! The Sunfish were nibbling and then i pulled out my first perch. “Woo Hoo!” I shouted, so much excitment for a small fish, to be honest I would have woo hoo-ed if i pulled in a minnow. After that we were catching little sunnies here and there, we were having a great time. But all of a sudden the bites died and the sky became gray and It began to lightly snow, That didn’t stop us oh no, we continued to fishing as a few minutes later the sky became clear and the sun was warming us up. But the fish had not started biting again we continued to hunt the fish walking up and down the shore of both coves as the weather made another atempt to stop us by raining on us then turning into snow again then back to sunny then rain, snow, and sun. At this point I looked at Nate and said “This is by far the strangest weather I’ve ever seen in my life.” But it did not stop us from trying to catch a beast of a fish.

We walked back out to the furthest point and made a long distance cast. we sat on a make-shif  bench and was talking about our next fishing trip and about exploring the other side of the lake when all of a sudden Nate Flew off the bench jerking back on his pole screaming in excitement “SET!, SET!, SET!” He reeled in as fast as he could When he pulled up a bull pout he did a song and dance that looked like the scarecrow from the wizard of oz. I went to un-hook the fish I realized he had set the hook in the whisker of the fish and not the lip. We laughed and talked about the set!, set!, set! he screamed and the fact that he set the the hook in the fish’s whisker. as we continued to fish the sky had once again turned ugly but this time we were pelted by hail we endured it for a minute before calling it a day.

Didn’t catch much that day like we do now but what a crazy day. I also learned how to use those slip-bobbers that day and I love em. We love telling this story especially over a few cold ones. I hope you enjoy it too.
